Brother and sister reunited after 60 years thanks to a Facebook profile picture. Allan Healey is now 66 years old and his sister Margaret Mitchell is 67 years old. They were separated in 1954 when their family was living in Dundee.
Allan spent 60 years looking for his sister Margaret. They were forced to separate after the divorce of their parents along with their older brother Stewart.
Allan and Stewart were taken by Barnardo’s children’s home. When Margaret moved away with their mum Elizabeth, the three lost touch completely.
After desperately searching birth and marriage certificates for three years, Allan took the resort of Facebook. He used a photo of the three siblings together as his Facebook profile picture. He asked via Facebook to provide information if anyone knew Margaret Healy.
Margaret was also searching for her long-lost siblings on the social media. Her neighbor Kathi McGill helped her to find her brother Allan.
Margaret said, ‘Kathie came through and said there was a photograph on Facebook with a young Allan Healey and a girl with him – and I was the girl. I was amazed.’
Brother and sister tearfully conversed with each other over phone and messaged. Allan is living in Margate. He went to Dundee where Margaret lives. The place is just a mile away from where they grew up.
Allan said, ‘I got out of the car, looked over and saw Margaret there. I ran over and hugged and cried. We couldn’t believe that we are together again.’
